    Broken/disconnected mystery hose?

2003 VW Passat GLS 1.8 Turbo
I have a hose on the passenger side of my engine that came disconnected or is possibly broken. It seems to only have air passing through it when the car is running. i can't see what it leads down to at the bottom. at the top it seems to lead to drum-shaped silver metal thing underneath of what i believe is the shut off valve. It isn't actually connected to the shut off valve, from what i can see. I've looked through diagrams and I can't seem to figure out what the drum-shaped thing is, or what this hose is for.
Basically, I'm wondering what the drum-shaped thing is and if my car is driveable with this hose detached. Am I able to just put a clamp on it for the time being until I can get it into a shop?
