MKIV Hatch Won't Lock

The hatch on my MKIV Golf won't lock. I can't stick the key in the slot at the back either. But when i lock my doors, the horn chirps to say everything is locked but i can just walk to the back and open the rear hatch which then sets the alarm off.

What could i do to fix this? Just would be nice to have a rear hatch that locks as i'm moving across country and i'll have quite a bit of valuables in the car

I had this same issue. You either need a new locking mechanism, or new solenoid.

thanks i'll take it in to the mechanic to see what he can do, hopefully these aren't too expensive
